Statement: On Medicaid’s 60th Anniversary, Local School Boards Are Left Holding the Line

July 30, 2025 — On the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, the School Board Integrity Project's Founder and Executive Director, Kyrstin Schuette, released the following statement:

“Sixty years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law—sealing a commitment that every American, no matter their income or circumstance, would be cared for. That promise has now been broken by lawmakers who voted for the so-called ‘One Big Beautiful Bill,’ slashing Medicaid and, with it, threatening the support public schools count on to fund nurses, mental health care, and special education.

The federal government may be walking away from that commitment—but local school boards are still on the front lines. School board members decide how to spend what's left, which programs to protect, and whether kids in their communities feel safe, supported, and seen.

The School Board Integrity Project is working everyday to recruit, train, and elect school board members who will steward public dollars with integrity, defend essential services, and put students first—even when Washington won’t.

Because even in a moment of federal failure, local leadership can still deliver on the promise every kid deserves.”
