Press Release: Minnesota-Based School Board Advocacy Group Demands Legislative Action After Annunciation Catholic School Shooting

Founder says lawmakers have failed to protect children and calls on leaders to act: “Back to school should not mean back to school shootings.”

August 27, 2025 — In response to today’s deadly shooting at Annunciation Catholic School, the School Board Integrity Project’s founder and executive director, Kyrstin Schuette, released the following statement:

“We are heartbroken for the parents of the precious and promising young lives lost today. Our hearts are also with the survivors, their families, the Annunciation Catholic School and parish community, and everyone in our beloved home state of Minnesota impacted by this senseless and evil act of violence.

“While our Minnesota hearts are heavy, we are also outraged. For years, right-wing lawmakers at the federal and state levels have stood idly by as gunmen have turned classrooms and places of worship into crime scenes. Politicians entrusted with protecting our communities have offered little more than ‘thoughts and prayers’ as students have been gunned to death. These children were literally praying. And they deserve action.

“As a society, protecting and educating our children are among our most basic responsibilities. Once again, lawmakers entrusted with meeting these responsibilities have failed. As citizens, we owe it to the children, families, and educators of the Annunciation Catholic School community—and every community shattered by gun violence—to demand lawmakers finally deliver change. Back to school should not mean back to school shootings. Together, we must mobilize to keep guns away from our schools and places of worship—and out of our communities.

“Every student in America—regardless of the school they attend, how they pray, who they love, or what they look like—deserves to learn freely and grow safely. After all, the future we choose for our schools is the future we choose for our country.”
